Week3 Play Journal
Journal
After a few days’ struggling on Zoom game development, the critique day finally come. It is exciting to see people’s reactions to my game, and it is also a great chance to learn from others.
Among all the great games I played during the critique, I find Rachel’s game, NFT Zoom Auction, gave me a lot of inspiration. The reason for that, I think, is both of us made games that require players to draw about a theme, but there is some more exciting element that drew my attention.
Rachel’s Game - NFT Zoom Auction
NFT Zoom Auction is a game between bidders and artists. The lying mechanism of the artist makes this game not only a single drawing game. During the critique, I became a bidder in the first round. It was interesting to listen to the artist selling their art piece, but when I realized that I need to find out who is lying, everything started to get complicated. I suddenly switched to the werewolves game mode and began to analyze whether they are lying to me.
It was not like the beginning of the class. At that time, I know nothing about everybody, and I’ve never played werewolves game with them. However, this time, I used the experience I learned from the Among Us, Werewolves experience. I cannot trust Camden, Brandon, and Mathew cause they have talent in building a perfect lie in a game. So I choose Catherine. It turned out that Catherine lied to me even when she sounded so honest and innocent. Then I lost the game, and Catherine became the next bidder.
From the game experience, I can see the potential of using the lying mechanism in a drawing game. I think it is a wonderland that hasn’t been discovered. Although Rachel did not mean to make a game base on a lying mechanism, the critique of Rachel’s game helps me find the critical components of a lying game.
Noise:
It is hard to find out the liers in while I play the bidder, and it is tough to let the player find out who is lying base on the reaction when players are drawing.
Clue:
In the werewolf game, the seer can always hint at players and lead the players. There is no such character in Rachel’s drawing game.
Again, Rachel’s game is not designed to be a lying game. I am just trying to find the critical missing component for a lying game in Rachel’s game because I can see the similarity between Rachel’s game and lying games.
As a result, I come out with a new game based on what I learned from Rachel’s game.
Game Idea
There are Artists and Fake Artists in the game. Artists’ job is to destroy all the fake art, and the Fake Artists’ job is to try their best to let their phony art survive in the market. (Werewolf setting)
Preparation
- Every artist will obtain a paper that separates into nine sections and a pen.
- 9-piece of plastic card that can cover the sections on the paper
- Every player will get a role(Artist/Fake Artist) from a deck of role cards.
- Pick a theme from a theme chart to draw. Don’t let other players see your paint. Cover your paint with plastic cards.
If you are a Fake Artist you need to draw something that is not related to the theme.
One Turn:
-
Start from a player. He/she need to show the first unrevealed grid of the paint by removing the card. Tell everyone which part it is. (Fake Artists need to convince other players that the part you showed is on-topic)
-
Every player needs to take a turn to perform phase 1.
-
Players need to vote out an Artist that most suspicious
-
Player who is voted out needs to show the whole painting to other players.
-
Next Turn
End Game
1.Game End when all the fake artists are voted out. Artists win the game.
2.Only 1/3 players are remaining in the game, but the fake artists still exist on the market. Fake Artists win the game.
Example: Theme - Fast Food
This is an Example of a Fake Artist’s perspective
(Prepration Phase)
(I am drawing a sandwich from Subway, this is the corner of a lettuce)
(As you can see, here we have the bread)
(If you ever ate Subway before, you will know what I am drawing)
(You said that this is a JigSaw? I think you don’t have sense for art)
(I took I bite)
Turn End - Fake Player wins
(Ha! I got you all! It is a Dinosaur)
