Week7 Play Journal

#A Stranger who Tells Stories This week we are making a discord bot to get ready for the final project. I come out with an idea that having a bot that telling urban myths to people. I think I took a lot of inspiration from Brandon Fields’ View Finder Game. He embedded a secret storytelling feature into an asynchronous game where people need to keep posting photos to the chat to earn scores. I find this really interesting, and I came out with this Idea.

I cannot really talk too much about the game here because it will spoil the story. However, I think it would be cool if I can make a discord bot that lures players with their curiosity. So I made this bot called Stranger (Please check it out on my itch.io page). It will tell you something about an urban myth in Davis, CA (where I live for 3 years for college).

Making this bot is also a great experience for me. I get to know a lot of interesting things that I never heard about in this city, and I think it inspired me on a potential game idea that I am super interested in.

Treasure in Davis

While talking with professor Patrick LeMieux about the game idea of project 3. I mentioned a Chinese game that I played as a kid. One of the most popular escape rooms, Mr.X, in Shanghai, China (the city where I lived for 18 years) made this app. They turned the whole city into an Escape room the hints in the app point to the real locations in Shanghai, and players need to get there physically in order to know hold to make progress in games.

As a result, I want to make the game Treasure In Davis. I want to make Davis into an Escape Room, and posting hints and pictures on the Discord server. I wish players can learn more about Davis while they playing this game and return to the campus where we miss a lot.
